Our October B Local Cornwall+ Social

On the evening of Wednesday October 20th the first ever in-person B Local Cornwall+ Social took place at our Leap base in Truro’s Old Bakery Studios. Co-hosted by Leap’s founder Matt Hocking and Russel Cosway of Gydeline, we were joined by over 70 attendees from the south west business community who braved heavy rain for an informal after-work get together. We talked about about the B Corp movement and certification, what it means and who it’s for, followed by lightning talks from fellow B Corps Origin Coffee, Resonance and Wildcard, and a panel discussion.

We were delighted to see representatives from not only our Cornwall based B Corps Finisterre, Green and Blue, Fluid Branding and Voice Communications, but also friends and B Leaders from Devon, London and Brighton including Propeller Digital, Hattiers Rum and Don’t Cry Wolf Consultancy.

Here are some of our key take-aways from the evening:

  • It’s a whole team experience
  • Becoming a B Corp maintains hopefulness and community
  • It’s a differentiator for doing the right thing
  • It is a people powered community
  • The UK is the fastest growing B Corp market in the world
  • Cornwall+ is the second largest B Corp cluster in the UK, outside of London
  • It should be the default norm of how business is done
  • Being a B Corp doesn’t define you or your purpose – you do that
  • It’s rewarding to be part of a robust, inclusive, regenerative economy
  • Importantly, use the BIA framework/tool regardless of whether or not your business is a B Corp – it’s free! bcorporation.uk

A big thanks as well to the wonderful Ben Quinn of Canteen who went from being a guest to being event caterer and for feeding us all so well, and to Cath and the Old Bakery Studios crew for always supporting business for good.

If you’re interested in finding out more about becoming a B Corp and its benefits then we’ll be back in a couple of months with another B Local social event, where you can learn more and speak to other businesses about their experiences.
