Loans that change lives with Kiva

At Leap we believe in people. Especially the power of people.

As a collective, as individuals, people have the ability to create a positive impact, both for environmental and social change.

And that’s exactly what our mission is here at Leap. To create change.

Since 2011, our B Corporation accredited studio has been supporting low-income entrepreneurs from various parts of the world through Kiva – a non-profit microfinancing organisation that connects people through lending to alleviate poverty.

Kiva celebrates and support individuals looking to create a better future for themselves, their families and their communities.

“Kiva is a simple concept that can change a person’s life” – Oprah

Those benefiting from the loans, known as ‘borrowers’ are made up of under-supported, financially excluded individuals, from 80 different countries across a variety of industries.

81% of Kiva borrowers are women

‘Lenders’ can fund as little as $25 which can help a borrower start or grow a business, go to school, access clean energy or realize their potential.

From the comfort of our Cornish based design studio, we’ve been responsible for partly funding enough money to buy fresh produce and stock for families and business owners across the globe to re-sell at local markets or their family fun stores.  We’ve helped farm workers purchase livestock, tools, and equipment to maintain and grow their working farms, and have increased the quality of educational facilities for local schools.

So far, we’ve helped projects in Kenya, Uganda, Pakistan, Peru, Congo, Armenia, Tanzania, Ecuador and El Salvador. Most recently, we invested a small loan to the Magatte’s Group in Senegal who are looking to fund $3,200 to help buy three sheep. Read more about their story here.

It’s the small acts of kindness that can make huge differences to peoples lives. Take Clenda’s story as an example…

woman and child from the kiva project

Clenda is a 26-year-old mother of two who has spent the last eight years working on building her farming business. She employs one farmhand and sells the milk her cow produces at the local market. In order to increase milk production and earn an extra income, Clenda needed a loan of 25,000 KES (300 USD) to go towards purchasing a new dairy cow.

Through Kiva’s Field Partner, Juhudi Kilimo, Clenda received a Kiva loan that was funded by 12 Kiva lenders worldwide. The extra income will help Clenda pay school fees for her children and increase her family’s standard of living. As production grows, she plans to purchase more dairy cows. Her loan has been fully repaid.

Current stats for Kiva

  • 1.8 million lenders
  • 82 countries
  • $1.23 billion loans funded
  • 96.8% repayment rate

So what you waiting for – make a loan, change a life.

Plus, 100% of every dollar you lend on Kiva goes to funding loans.
