A fresh perspective on impact

Hi I’m Federica Sasso. As part of my masters in Sustainable Environmental Management at the University of Plymouth, I had the chance to work with Leap for a few months, diving deep into their internal reporting. This experience was not only an opportunity for me to contribute meaningfully, but also a journey of personal and professional growth. It introduced me to the ins and outs of operating as a B Corp, the importance of transparent reporting, and Leap’s role in driving positive change.

Reporting with purpose

Over three months, I focused on updating three key non-financial reports: the annual Impact Report, Client Disclosure Report, and Planet Positive Plan. My role involved reviewing past reports, analysing new data, and shaping updated versions that truly reflect Leap’s evolving values and ambitions.

The challenge? Learning new tools, understanding unfamiliar reporting formats, and working within a tight timeframe. But through collaboration, clear targets, and a commitment to impact, we ensured that the reports weren’t just numbers and words—they became tools for meaningful action.

Lessons in transparency and collaboration

Working with the Leap team was an incredibly rewarding experience. From the start, I felt welcomed into a positive, collaborative environment. Being part of a B Corp dedicated to driving meaningful change, and working alongside like-minded people who share a commitment to protecting the environment and taking meaningful actions was truly inspiring and motivating.

I saw firsthand how reporting goes beyond compliance, it’s about accountability, learning, and driving change. I learned to navigate the frameworks that shape their reporting and sharpened my data analysis skills, particularly in calculating Leap’s carbon emissions. More than anything, I saw the power of transparency — not just celebrating achievements, but openly addressing challenges and using them as a foundation for progress.

Looking forward

This project was a learning experience in many ways. I gained a better understanding of the various bodies and standards that guide the design, structure and content of the different reports. I also developed my technical skills, particularly managing and analysing data in spreadsheet software while working on calculating Leap’s carbon emissions.

One of the most important lessons I learned is the value of transparency for a business. Reporting isn’t just about showcasing achievements — it’s about being honest about challenges and using them as a foundation for continuous improvement. Another key takeaway was the importance of clear, consistent communication within the team. It helped me and the team ensure accuracy, and a shared understanding of goal posts throughout the process.

My reflections

Coming in with a fresh perspective on Leap’s values and actions, I contributed to reports that now reflect Leap’s updated planet-positive targets for the coming years. Calculating Leap’s carbon emissions and aligning the reports with their ambitious sustainability goals felt incredibly fulfilling, knowing these reports will help drive meaningful action and set standards for accountability.

I want to thank the Leap team for their support and for the amazing opportunity to work alongside them. This experience has given me a greater awareness of how different sectors can engage in sustainable practices — motivating others and taking direct actions to create change. It has also reinforced my passion for sustainability and the need to aim higher than just achieving net-zero. I look forward to applying what I’ve learned with Leap and continuing on my journey within this sector.
