SHIFT / A climate choose-your-own-adventure with Project Drawdown and Dr Kimberly Nicholas

The Brief

It’s one thing to care about climate change, it’s another to know what to do about it. SHIFT set out to close that gap, blending science with storytelling and play.

Project Drawdown – the world’s leading guide to science-based climate solutions – and renowned climate scientist and author Dr Kimberly Nicholas have collaborated on a research-backed guide, to show people where they have the biggest opportunities to make a difference. But to scale its reach and impact, they needed a more engaging, adaptable tool – one that could give people a plan of action tailored to their lives. The climate crisis is overwhelming and feelings of anxiety and even guilt can lead to action paralysis, the idea of this project was to make it easier for people to understand what they can do.

Our Solution

Leap helped evolve SHIFT (The Super High-impact Initiative for Fixing Tomorrow) into a full interactive experience – a choose-your-own-adventure guide that feels more like a game than a lecture.

We structured the multiple user journeys, mapped the branching logic, and built an adaptive flow that changes depending on the user’s choices and how much time they have. We also created the characters and colourful animations representing the five “climate superpowers” – citizen, investor, professional, consumer, and role model – giving the guide personality and visual appeal.

We led on naming through a collaborative process, designed the look and feel, developed animations, built the platform, and wrote content for the homepage and user pathways. The result is a digital tool that takes rigorous climate science and delivers it with clarity, and fun.
